WORLD TITLE *DEFENSE

Brad Fowler, London, Ontario, Canada:
14-6/9, A: 2-1/1, 152, 5'8", 2-11-69
VS
Mike Morello, Santa Barbara, California, USA, C:
13-7-1/2, 152, 5'10", 5-29-72.
WINNER: Brad Fowler by unanimous decision,
115-113, 117-111 & 116-112.

The super welterweight (147-153 pounds) championship was also on the table, with Brad Fowler defending his crown against Mike Morello in a bout that had the crowd at the London Convention Centre on their feet from start to finish. Fowler had the London crowd behind him, in his first fight in his hometown, but it didn't seem to discourage Morello, as the two seemed content with standing their ground and trading punches- testing the others chin. Both opponents abandoned their kickboxing for large portions of the fight, using their boxing skills to throw heavy punches that dazed their opponent but it was a battle of heart as neither men were willing to go down by the end of the 12 rounds. The hometown hero came out with the victory in a unanimous decision and after the fight announced his retirement. "I knew it was going to be a good fight, I knew there's was going to be times when I would have to box and throw a couple hard shots here and there and that's what I did," Fowler said.

Canada's Brad Fowler has waited two years to erase his bitter sweet title victory from his mind. it was back on October 17th, 2009 in Ontario, Canada, when Fowler was suppose to prove to the world he was a true WORLD CHAMPION! However, Fowler never even got the chance to throw one punch let along any kicks. At weigh-ins, his scheduled opponent Fernando Calleros of New Mexico came in "18 lbs. overweight and the bout was scratched. Fowler won the title on the scales, but not at all how any true Champion want's to win the Gold. This being said, Fowler has waited TWO YEARS to try and redeem himself. Finally the opportunity came as Fowler would find himself in a bout much more than he probably expected against "The Madman", Mike Morello.

Toe to toe these two seemed to match up pretty evenly. Neither threw more than 14 kicks a round and both pretty much stayed at the 9-10 kicks per round range. Although the ring canvas was extremely slippery, it seemed to play a bigger part in this bout than the other bouts. Both these guys wanted to kick more but the slippery canvas just wouldn't allow it. In one of the opening rounds Morello caught Fowler with a good shot. Some could have called it a knockdown while others saw Fowler be the victim of the slippery canvas, unable to keep himself on his feet after the shot.

Morello seemed to move in with his head down, which became an easy target for Fowler, and once inside, Morello never unloaded like a true "Madman!" Choosing to play the conservative fight game, Morello seemed as though he was pacing himself for a 12 round battle. Midway through the fight it was still anyone's fight. After the midway point of 6 rounds the judges had it 58-56 Fowler, 59-55 Fowler and 57-57 even.

By round 10 though the gap had opened. Fowler had already figured out how to counter Morello's head first approach, and now he was just adding to his options of what to do when Morello cornered him. Morello had loads of chances to open up with a "Madman's" barrage but sadly, he never did as he continued to be conservative. Don't get us wrong here, these two threw some HEAT! Both took some shots but due to their toughness, they just brushed them off. It's just that when they did land the big one, neither fighter followed it up. It was almost like they both either feared or respected their opponents ability to counter with a knockout blow.

At the end of 10 the judges scores were 97-93 Fowler, 98-92 Fowler and 96-94 Fowler. The judges seemed to be all over the board in the final two rounds. One gave each of the final two rounds to Morello 10-9, the other gave both rounds to Fowler 10-9 and the 3rd judge split them at 10-9 for Morello in the 11th and 10-9 for Fowler in the 12th.

In the end Fowler got the win 115-113, 117-111 and 116-112. Congratulations to Brad Fowler for attaining his IKF Gold the way a real fighter wants to, in the ring against a strong opponent. As for Morello though, it appears Fowler has announced his retirement which means we may see the "MADMAN" back in the ring for another chance at his much desired IKF Gold before you can blink an eye. All he needs now is a promoter willing to host it.

Paul Minhas, (416) 289-9997.

WINNER: Jesse Ronson by unanimous decision, 39-37, 39-37 & 40-36.

From The London Community News PRESS:Fowler wasn't the only one showing off his fighting skills in front of the home crowd, as London's middleweight (159-165 pounds) Jesse Ronson was put on the undercard against Troy Sheridan, making his professional debut. Sheridan put up a good fight but Ronson showed his years of comfort in the professional spotlight, gliding around the ring and having his rookie opponent swinging for air. Ronson countered time and time again, leaving Sheridan with a bloody nose by the fourth and final round of the fight. The hometown favorite took home the victory with a unanimous win.

Brad Fowler of London, left, and Muzammal Nawaz of Burlington will defend their titles at the Showdown in the Downtown kickboxing event at the London Convention Centre on Oct. 1. (CRAIG GLOVER The London Free Press)

It's going to be a big night for two kickboxers. For Londoner Brad Fowler, it will be the first time he ís been able to perform professionally in his hometown. Muzaammal Nawaz will also be defending his world kickboxing title. But he ís already a big winner because he ís getting the better of a rare kidney disease that almost took his life. The two will be performing in the Showdown in the Downtown at the London Convention Centre.

In the past, the fight card involved boxers as did its predecessor the Banger in the Hangar. This year, organizers have gone a different route, staging two world title bouts on the same card.

Proceeds will go to help knock out kidney disease. Nawaz will take on Shannon (The Cannon) Hudson. Nawaz is the reigning five-time world middleweight champion. Hudson is the No. 1 contender. Fowler is the world super welterweight champ. Heíll fight Mike (Mad Dog Morello), the No. 3-ranked contender.

"When I found out what the money was being raised for, I just wanted to fight here even more," Nawaz said. "I would be raising money that will help me." Nawaz has Goodpasture's Disease, a disease that damages the kidneys and can also damage the lungs. It's an autoimmune condition, in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks a target within the body. In this case, the target is the filtering units of the kidney.

"It's a rare but life-threatening disease," said Dr. Faisal Rehman, one of the organizers of the event. Nawaz was diagnosed in 1998. "I'd just had a fight and had back pain," Nawaz said. "I thought it was just the after-affects of the fight. But it kept getting worse and worse and worse and finally, I couldn't walk." His wife convinced him to go to hospital. Within 24 hours his kidneys had stopped functioning. They put him on dialysis and then his lung collapsed and he went onto a respirator. He was hooked up to intravenous drips. "But because my kidneys weren't functioning, I went up to 210 pounds, my head was this big. I had trouble breathing," Nawaz said.

They put him through chemotherapy and after three days the problem was under control. "It took six months to a year for my body to get back to normal," Nawaz said. But he wasn't done yet. Two years after that, he came out of remission. "It was a shock because I was told it rarely ever came out of remission," he said. "If you come out of remission, it has high mortality rate."

So there was more chemo. Nawaz has now been five years in his second remission and the 43-year-old is looking to defend his title yet again. He will be donating his purse to the battle against kidney disease. Most of the combatants in the six-bout card are participating at a reduced purse. For Fowler, being able to defend his title in London is the real attraction to this card. London was a hotbed of kickboxing years ago when Leo Loucks was getting title shots.

"I've fought in Toronto, North Bay, Burlington but never here," Fowler said. "An event in London would be expensive to hold so no promoter has wanted to do it." Fowler is 41. He is a personal trainer and runs Round One with partner Bernie Tapp, a club for boxers and kickboxers. He doesn't feel his age is any impediment to how he performs. "It's a question of a healthy lifestyle," Fowler said. "Look at Bernard Hopkins." Hopkins, 46, recently won the WBC middleweight title. Like boxing, kickboxing is lost in the shuffle of one-on-one contact sports.

"I think it has (been lost in the shuffle,)" Fowler said. "It stopped being on television. Whatever the media picks up, people follow. I've always liked contact sports. If you go see a MMA (mixed martial arts) event what ís the first thing people yell? 'Stand him up. Stand him up.' "They want people to stand up. If there was the right media attention and right promotion I think it would really come back."

PRO Kickboxing is back in Ontario and history is made!

The second bout pitted USA Champion – Ben Acosta of Texas – against Intercontinental Champion – Brad Fowler of London, Ontario.  Fowler also brought a large cheering squad who encouraged their valiant warrior through this bout.  Acosta started out the bout displaying incredible kicking skills.  He threw jump kicks, spin kicks, head kicks throughout the earlier rounds of their scheduled 8 round bout.  By the 3 round, Fowler was breaking Acosta’s timing and landing hard body punches and counters attacks with both hands and feet.  Fowler ramped out the pace by round 4 sensing the tide swaying in his favor.  After a punishing combination near the end of the round – referee Vic Provost of Ottawa stepped in and stopped the bout.  The TKO victory for Fowler moved him to the number #1 contender position in the welterweight division and a definite shot at a World Title.
